Solar Energy - Frequently Asked Questions

What are solar panels made of?

Solar panels are made up of cells and silicon that convert light energy into electricity. There are three different types of silicon used;

Monocrystalline; this is the most efficient but normally more expensive.

Polycrystalline; this is less expensive however the solar panels are normally larger and less efficient

Amorphous; these panels are the cheapest version and are more effective in low light conditions. These also have more flexibility so can be installed in awkward locations.

Who can have solar panels?

Any property can have solar panels installed as long as you meet some basic criteria. Call us on 01233 665107 to discuss your options.

What size solar panel do I need?

A standard sized home can have a 4kw panel installed and this will provide all the electricity a family needs. Churches, Schools and farms are an example of structures which would benefit from additional panels.

Can I mix different solar panels?

Yes, as long as the voltage of each type is the same.

How long does the installation take?

Within a standard home a solar panel system can be installed and connected to your meter within 2 days.

Is there any maintenance?

Solar Panel systems require virtually no maintenance, as they have no moving parts they cannot go wrong. We recommend they are cleaned annually, but they can be cleaned using soapy water and then rinsed off.

When should the electrics be checked?

The solar panel electrics will be checked at the same time as your periodic inspection. For more information on your home electrical testing click here.

What is the Feed-In Tariff?
